Making Phonics Truly Age-appropriate

17 March 2023 @ 09:30 - 13:30
Looking at the concepts that underpin linguistic phonics and how it works to unlock that latent knowledge and fill gaps within an ethos that guarantees a shame-free learning experience.

Summary of the event:

Older struggling readers have varying degrees of:

  • knowledge about how the English language works in print
  • gaps in understanding about how what they say out loud relates to what they see on the page
  • decoding habits which hinder them from engaging in a secondary curriculum
  • anxiety about facing the printed word.

We will look at the concepts that underpin linguistic phonics and how it works to unlock that latent knowledge and fill gaps within an ethos that guarantees a shame-free learning experience.

We will also examine:

  • the simple view of reading and the Scarborough reading rope as they relate to secondary age learners
  • the word reading habits of confident and struggling readers
  • the reciprocal relationship between reading and spelling.

Training led by: Tricia Millar (That Reading Thing)

For more than 20 years, Tricia has trained teachers, support staff, vocational and community educators around the world in shame-free, engaging and comprehensively age-appropriate phonics which gets teen and adult learners ‘unstuck’. She is the creator That Reading Thing (TRT) and its approach to spelling which combines phonics and everyday morphology to improve vocabulary across the curriculum.

Audience: Anyone who works with and would like to support secondary age young people who aren’t thriving in school due to their reading.
