Introduction to Developmental Language Disorder

Delegates will learn how DLD affects learning, social-emotional well-being and strategies to support learners.






Summary of the event:

This course will give examples of

  • what Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is,
  • signs of DLD in the classroom,
  • how it affects children’s learning and social-emotional well-being.

As a result of this session you

  • will have strategies for differentiating / adapting / scaffolding lessons
  • will be able to provide support for learners with DLD
  • have an over-view of evidence-based interventions

There will be opportunities for case discussion and planning.

Training led by: Dr Courtenay Norbury

Courtenay Norbury is Professor of Developmental Disorders of Language and Communication at Psychology and Language Sciences, University College London. She is the Director of the Literacy, Language and Communication (LiLaC) Lab ( and a Fellow of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. She obtained her PhD in Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford, working with Professor Dorothy Bishop on the overlapping language profiles that characterise autism and developmental language disorder.

Professor Norbury’s current research focuses on language disorders and how language interacts with other aspects of academic, social and cognitive development. She leads SCALES, a population study of language development and disorder from school entry. She is also a founding member of the RADLD campaign (
