Dyscalculia - A Specific Learning Difficulty in Maths How to Help

This half day workshop will focus on how to identify and support learners with dyscalculia, using screeners and a range of manipulatives. 

What can you can expect from the training?

You will explore practical and developmental strategies to support learners with dyscalculia including

  • the use of dot patterns,
  • ten frames,
  • manipulatives such as Cuisenaire rods.
  • Demonstration of the value of visualisation strategies such as bar modelling for solving word problems.

As a result of the workshop you will:

  • be able to identify dyscalculia and distinguish it from more general maths difficulties.
  • have practical strategies to use in the classroom to support learners with dyscalculia.

Training led by: Judy Hornigold
Judy is an independent educational consultant specialising in dyscalculia and dyslexia and has been a Singapore Maths trainer, for UK based Maths No Problem since 2014. She is particularly passionate about the teaching of maths and of finding ways to support learners with dyscalculia and general maths learning difficulties. Judy is an associate tutor for Edge Hill University and the British Dyslexia Association. Recent publications include ‘Can I Tell You About Dyscalculia’, published by Jessica Kingsley in 2020.
