Addressing Handwriting Difficulties

21 May 2021 @ 09:30 - 15:30
A practical session looking at how a well designed handwriting intervention programme can support the development of handwriting skills.

The development of handwriting is an important activity in the school curriculum. The process of handwriting involves the complicated co-ordination of motor, perceptual and cognitive skills which, do not always develop spontaneously, but require considerable explanation, demonstration, experimentation and practice. Many children struggle with this area of their education with a negative effect on their confidence and academic attainment.

This practical training day will consider:

The biomechanical and ergonomic influences on handwriting legibility

  • How to identify issues experienced by children in both primary and secondary education
  • Approaches to addressing handwriting difficulties with an emphasis on the perceptual-motor and kinaesthetic approach
  • When it is appropriate to recommend augmentative technology

Training day outcomes:

  • Delegates will be able to analyse samples from pupils whose handwriting they are concerned about
  • Formulate a specific intervention plan to address the identified issues
