Asset-Based Approach to Addressing Handwriting Difficulties

This workshop will demonstrate how it is possible to engage the assets and skills which surround the child to meet the need.

Teachers and health professionals are often frustrated by the lack of time and resources available to them to give those children who are struggling with certain aspects of the curriculum the input time they need. This workshop will demonstrate how it is possible to engage the assets and skills which surround the child to meet the need. It will demonstrate how a capacity-focused approach was utilised to deliver a handwriting programme to eight children attending a rural primary engaging parent-volunteers.

The asset-based approach considers the capacities, skills and assets surrounding the child, and explores how these can be harnessed to meet the child’s learning needs. This approach transfers the focus from a services perspective to an empowerment perspective; altering the perception of
professional dominance to collaborative, dynamic partnerships.

The approach was formally evaluated using qualitative and quantitative data collection methods, and the results were positive. These will be presented to demonstrate that this can be an effective mode of educational delivery.

Learning outcomes:

  • To appreciate why children still need to learn to write from a neurodevelopmental perspective
  • To consider how to harness the assets surrounding the child to implement specific interventions
  • To demonstrate how the asset-based approach can work in practice.

Training led by: Lois M Addy MA (Ed) BSc (Hons) Psych. Dip COT SROT, SI-UK

Lois Addy is an independent SEND advisor and lecturer, teaching both nationally and internationally. She has qualifications in occupational therapy, psychology and education, and has over 37 years’ experience in working with children with SEN; especially those with developmental coordination disorder (dyspraxia). Lois is the author of a number of books including ‘How to Identify & Overcome Handwriting Difficulties’.
