Working Memory: Limitations and solutions

Morning workshop (9.30am - 12noon) presented by: Suzanne Murray (Specialist Teacher, AMBDA)

In this workshop we will explore:

  • What is working memory?
  • How do difficulties with working memory impact on learning?
  • How does working memory link to what scientists understand of other aspects of memory?
  • How can we identify children with poor working memory in the classroom from their behaviours?
  • How do working memory difficulties impact on cognitive load and successful outcomes.
  • Practical strategies to support children with poor working memory.

Experiencing Success: Applying dyslexia-friendly teaching to Primary National Curriculum (NC) Literacy Targets

Afternoon workshop (1.00pm - 3.30pm) presented by: Suzanne Murray (Specialist Teacher, AMBDA)

In this workshop:

  • We will briefly revisit the NC literacy framework – how is it designed to support vulnerable learners?
  • What are the areas of commonality between the NC targets and a specialist literacy programme? Why are they important?
  • What are the key issues which typically hinder progress in vulnerable children (reference to memory)
  • What approaches can be used to ensure ALL learners make progress? Here we will take a NC Literacy target from each year group: Reception to year 6, and look at how D.R.E.A. M. principles can be applied.
