Summary of the event:

To be effective, targets need to be based on children’s and caregivers’ wishes, views and feelings, underpin effective provision and practice.

This training session is designed and structured to support staff in meeting their legal and regulatory duties for children and young people with SEND.

Aim

To develop understanding of current legislation, convention and policy regarding person centred approaches for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities and to apply these in target setting

Objectives (by the end of the training)

  • To apply creative approaches to sharing views on the barriers and enablers to writing SMART targets
  • To write observable and measurable SMART targets for children and young people with SEND
  • To recall and discuss some person-centred approaches to capturing the voice of children and young people with SEND and those of their caregivers

Training led by: Sarah Martin-Denham (PhD)

Sarah is Associate Professor of Care and Education at the University of Sunderland and the Programme Leader for the National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination on-campus route.

She leads externally funded research for a range of organisations on school exclusion, childhood adversities and children’s social care.

Her passion for child and caregiver voice comes from personal experiences of being neurodiverse and from supporting children, young people and adults with SEND.
